South African Coal exports rose both on the monthly and yearly basis.
South Africa witness increase in its coal exports by 14% M-o-M to 6.85 MnT in Feb’17 compared with 6.03 MnT in Jan’17. Beside, yearly export from the country has risen significantly by 39% compared with 4.93 MnT in Feb’16, according to the data released by South African Customs.
Coal Exports have increased after falling in the previous months of Dec’16 and Jan’17, following an increase in demand from their major importer India, as Indian utilities look to stock coal before the arrival of monsoon.
Grade-wise Exports:
South Africa majorly exports Bituminous coal, which accounts for more than 90% of the total coal exported from the country. In Feb’17, Bituminous coal exports increased by 17% M-o-M to 6.57 MnT.
Other coal commodities include Anthracite, Coke, Briquettes and other grade of coal. However, exports of all these coal grades fell over the month.

Quantities in MnT
Major Importing Countries:
India has remained the major importer of South African coal in Feb’17, followed by South Korea, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Taiwan.
India received 2.89 MnT coal in Feb’17 against 1.29 MnT in Jan’17, registering growth of 123% M-o-M. Yearly imports also increased by 8% from 2.66 MnT in Feb’16.
South Korea second-largest importer, recorded downfall of 25% in their monthly imports, received 0.87 MnT coal in Feb’17.
Pakistan third-largest coal importer received 0.47 MnT coal with a minute increase in monthly imports.
Sri Lanka and Taiwan saw major improvement in their monthly imports by registering growth of 94% and 197% respectively.
