Why Exports Dipped?
Notably, exports of Met Coke and Coking Coal in Jan’17 had increased by 75% and 59% respectively over the corresponding exports in the previous month. The underlying factor seems to be the prevalence of high Coking Coal prices in Australia.
While, exports of Non Coking coal during the first month of the current fiscal dipped by 4% ,primarily due to the temporary suspension in operations of the terminal in the month due to bad weather.
Significance of RBCT
The Richard Bay Coal Terminal is the most prominent port terminal in South Africa for exporting coal (and derivatives). The terminal handles about 0.2-0.3 MnT coal loading every day.
