SECL commissions new coal evacuation facility at Kusmunda project

South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL) has flagged off first full rake of coal loaded from its newly constructed silo at Kusmunda opencast mine.

The company has planned to operationalize four silos to promote coal supply from its Kusmunda project having 50 mnt capacity. At present, the silo number 3 has been commissioned from where the first consignment was dispatched on 18 Mar ’21, while the other three are under construction.

The new facility build under the integrated coal handling plant comprises of rapid loading system in order to provide efficient and economical coal dispatches. At the same time, these would phase out traditional wharf loading thereby reducing the pollution caused in coal movement.

Apart from faster coal evacuation, the facility has been planned to provide multiple benefits to the coal company as it aims to meet the rising coal demand. These include:

*Improvement in coal quality ensured by loading of sized coal into the wagons.
*Reduction in turn-over time for wagon loading.
*Increasing the wagon availability.
*Accurate loading minimizing the risk of under loading/overloading of coal.

Spike in coal production to meet fiscal target:

On top of inaugurating the new silo, SECL capped off the week with remarkable performance seen in terms of coal production.

The company produced 1,001,082 t coal on 19 Mar ’21, which is the second highest output recorded in a single day. Although, the milestone for peak output marked at 1,001,675 t was nearly missed, it managed to breach the highest combined production registered from the three mega open cast mines (OCM).

Notably, coal production from the three OCMs recorded on 19 Mar ’21 was 856,162 t, thus surpassing the previous record of 841,197 t set on 27 Mar ’20.

In addition to the surge in coal production, highest single day dispatch of 538,333 t coal was made for the fiscal, which was also accompanied by highest ever coal loading of 72 rakes on the same day.
