SCCL: Coal Production Up 5% M-o-M in Dec’19

Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) has reported a 6-month high total for coal production attained during Dec’19. The company has clocked 5.71 MnT coal output in Dec’19 which was 5% higher on the month from 5.44 MnT in Nov’19.

Contrarily, the production volume had extended its decline during Dec’19 as it was the fifth straight month for which SCCL’s coal output has fallen on the Y-o-Y basis. The company had recorded 6.04 MnT coal production in Dec’18.

During the first 9 months of FY20 (Apr-Dec’19), SCCL’s coal production has reached 46.75 MnT, up 3% Y-o-Y from 45.58 MnT noted in the year-ago period.

Coal dispatch noted from SCCL also increased during the month in line with the progressive rise in production levels. Coal supplies in Dec’19 was recorded 4% higher on the month at 5.58 MnT, but was down 8% Y-o-Y from 6.08 MnT in Dec’18.

Total coal supplies in the 9-month period of FY20 have decreased 6% Y-o-Y to 46.35 MnT as against 49.11 MnT recorded in the same period last fiscal.

Apparently, a fall in coal transportation via road mode could be attributed to the decline in total supplies made in the 9-month period.

Coal dispatch envisaged from road mode of transportation has decreased 36% Y-o-Y to 6.89 MnT in Apr-Dec’19. Whereas, dispatch via rail mode were augmented to 33.16 MnT in the 9-month period compared with 31.95 MnT noted in the year-ago period.

SCCL has been keen to meet its annual fiscal targets by raising its coal production and dispatch levels. Recent media reports have highlighted that the company has conveyed the Railways to increase the number of rake for coal transportation as a part of the plan.

Incidentally, SCCL has delivered 1,068 coal rakes in total, at an average of 34.45 rakes/day during Dec’19, which is likely to be increased to 40 rakes/day for the remainder of the fiscal period.
