According to the market reports, SAIL’s (Steel Authority of India Limited)’s RSP (Rourkela Steel Plant) in Odisha which is country’s first public sector integrated steel plant started in 1960, has set a new benchmark in May’18 in terms of production improving upon its previous performances.
The hot metal output from the plant’s blast furnaces is recorded to be all time high at 336,882 tonnes. The SMS-II (Steel Melting Shop) made a major contribution by producing 260,668 tonnes of crude steel which is its highest ever performance. Similarly, the total crude steel production is also recorded to be highest ever at 312,498 tonnes.
The three sinter plants produced 566,462 tonnes of sinter which is the highest figure since it started. The ore bedding and blending plant registered the highest base mix stacking of 633,151 tonnes, which is again its best ever performance.
In the first two months of FY19 (April-May’18) the RSP has registered its best ever performance in hot metal (632,800 tonnes), crude steel (589,749 tonnes) and saleable steel (504,630 tonnes).
This increase in production can be attributed to the restart of RSP’s first ever blast furnace ‘Parvati’ under the company’s modernisation and expansion program.
On 8 May’18, SAIL’s RSP first blast furnace which is much bigger and technologically more advanced was blown in after being demolished in Aug’13 for total rebuilding. Before its complete shut-down, the furnace was taken down five times for major relining and repair works.
The useful volume of this rebuilt furnace has increased from 1,139 cubic metres to 1,170 cubic metres resulting which its annual production will grow three times from 0.44 MnT per annum to 1.02 MnT per annum.
Apart from increasing production, the new furnace constructed is more environment friendly as its new features will help in reducing its dependence on coal which will, in turn, improve the carbon footprint.
