As per the market sources, state-run steel major SAIL (Steel Authority of India Limited) has supplied about 10,500 tonnes of steel for 330 MW (Megawatts) Kishanganga Hydroelectric Power Project in Bandipora district of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) which is about 50% of the project’s total steel requirement.
SAIL’s supply for this project majorly includes TMT rebars, structural, plates, and sheets. The project is of national importance and is inaugurated by the prime minister. The project is USD 864 million dam which is part of a run-of-the-river hydroelectric scheme that is designed to divert water from the Kishanganga River to a power plant in the Jhelum River basin.
Although the construction of the project was started in the year 2007 and was expected to be completed in 2016, the construction work was halted when Pakistan had challenged the project under the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960. However, the International Court of Arbitration at The Hague ruled in India’s favour in 2013.
The Jhelum originates in India and flows into Pakistan, and according to the Indus Water Treaty, whoever builds the project first will have the first rights on the river water. With the construction of this project will provide 13% free power to the state including 1% for local area development fund amounting to INR 133 crore.
SAIL has also supplied about 70% which is 5,000 tonnes of steel for Tuirial Hydroelectric Power Project located in Mizoram. The company’s steel supply here also included plates, structural, TMTs, and value-added steel. The hydropower project will produce 251 million units of electrical energy every year. The market reports suggest that the company has supplied around 90% steel for constructing country’s longest Dhola-Sadiya bridge in Assam and is also supplying steel for projects including Bogibeel Rail-cum-Road bridge, several power plants including 750 MW power plant of NTPC, 600 MW Kameng Hydro- electric project, and Trans Arunachal highway.
