Russian coal exports in Jan’19 have fallen to its lowest mark since Jul’17, due in part to rail restrictions to north-western ports.
Coal exports decreased 40% M-o-M to 11.4 MnT in Jan’19, which also 2% lower on the year from 11.68 MnT in Jan’18, as per the data provided by customs.
Russian coal production was also down during Jan’19, after witnessing a multi-month high total in Dec’18. As per the data provided by Ministry of Energy, production dropped 7% on the month to 36.29 MnT in Jan’19.
In terms of electricity production, the country had recorded output of 105,700 GWh (Giga Watt Hour) in Jan’18, down from 107,520 GWh in Dec’18.
Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Exports of all the major coal grades had decreased during the month.
Russian non-coking exports dropped 43% M-o-M to 8.1 MnT in Jan’19 as against 14.24 MnT in Dec’18.
Anthracite became the second largest exported grade of coal, replacing coking coal whose exports had reduced to half m-o-m during Jan’19.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Importers:
All the major coal receivers from Russia had seen their imports falling during the month.
South Korea remained the largest coal importer in Jan’19, but had witnessed its lowest monthly coal receipt since Feb’18. Imports were down 37% M-o-M to 1.53 MnT in Jan’19, also declining 3% Y-o-Y.
Germany was the second-largest coal receiver in Jan’19. The country’s import fell 44% on the month to 1.24 MnT, but was 176% higher on the year from 0.45 MnT in Jan’18.
China, the third-largest importer, had received 1.1 MnT coal in Jan’19.
Japan, Poland, Ukraine, Taiwan and Turkey were among the other major coal importers in Jan’19.
