Russian coal exports have dropped 4% Q-o-Q to 52.01 MnT during the second quarter of CY19 (Apr-Jun’19) compared with 54.37 MnT recorded in Q1 CY19 period.
Russian coal suppliers benefited from restrictions imposed by Chinese government on imports of Australian coal, as export shipments to China continued its rising trend on the quarter period.
Elsewhere, limited demand from consumers in Europe and Asia-Pacific had resulted in a decline in Russian Q2 CY19 exports, which although, were slightly higher than the levels attained in the same quarter last year.
Notably, Russia had exported 51.76 MnT coal in Q2 CY18.
Over the course of the first 6 months in CY19 (Jan-Jun’19), Russian coal exports have reached 106.38 MnT, up 7% Y-o-Y from 99.01 MnT in the corresponding period of CY18.
Grade-wise Coal Exports:
During the second quarter of CY19, Russia had witnessed a fall in both coking and non-coking exports on quarterly basis.
Exports of non-coking coal fell 6% Q-o-Q to 36.88 MnT, along with coking coal shipments marked at 6.34 MnT in Q2 CY19 period.
There was a noticeable rise in Anthracite coal shipments, which remained the second largest traded coal commodity during Q2 CY19. Exports of Anthracite coal increased 2% Q-o-Q to 7.43 MnT.

Qunatity in MnT
Major Coal Importers:
China was the largest receiver of Russian coal in Q2 CY19 period. Imports by the country grew 40% Q-o-Q to 7.76 MnT compared with 5.54 MnT in Q1 CY19, which was also 34% higher on the year from 5.77 MnT in Q2 CY18.
South Korean reform envisaged upon shifting away from coal-fired power generation, lowered their import demand during Q2 CY19. The country’s coal import from Russia was down 11% Q-o-Q to 5.54 MnT in the second quarter of CY19, also falling 15% Y-o-Y from 6.48 MnT in Q2 CY18.
Germany was the third-largest receiver of Russian coal in Q2 CY19. Coal imports by Germany decreased 17% Q-o-Q to 5.5 MnT against 6.64 MnT in Q1 CY19, but had doubled from 2.64 MnT noted in year-ago quarter period.
