Russian coal exports have witnessed drastic fall on the monthly basis in Apr’18, but were still 42% higher on the year than the levels attained in Apr’17.
As per the data provided by Russian customs, coal export from the country has dropped to 13.94 MnT in Apr’18 against 20.31 MnT in Mar’18. On the yearly basis, export had increased 42% from 9.81 MnT in Apr’17.
Russian coal export has recorded growth on the year-on-year basis during each of the first 4 months of CY18. Total coal export from the country has reached 61.19 MnT in Jan’18-Apr’18 period, which was 16% more than the exports of 52.69 MnT marked during the same period in CY17.
Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Russian non-coking coal exports have dropped 37% on the month to 10.17 MnT in Apr’18. Coking coal export was down 26% on the month, marked at 1.62 MnT in Apr’18.
Anthracite coal exports had increased 5% M-o-M to 1.8 MnT in Apr’18. Met coke exports had also seen slight increase on the monthly basis.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Importers:
South Korea remained the largest importer of Russian coal in Apr’18, followed by China. While, UK had replaced Japan to become the third-largest coal importer during the month.
South Korean coal import had fell 23% on the month to 2.04 MnT in Apr’18 compared with 2.66 MnT in Mar’18, but were 59% higher on the year compared with 1.28 MnT in Apr’17.
Chinese coal import too had fell 42% on the month to 1.46 MnT in Apr’18, but were 8% higher on the year than the levels attained in Apr’17.
UK was the only country among the top 7 importers which had recorded growth in monthly imports in Apr’18. The country had witnessed a substantial increase in coal imports to 1.44 MnT in Apr’18, up 87% M-o-M from 0.77 MnT in Mar’18.
Ukraine, Japan, Poland, Taiwan, Netherlands and Germany were among the other major coal importers in Apr’17.

Russian Coal Imports in Apr’18:
Russian coal import in Apr’18 was 1.56 MnT, down 13% on the month from 1.8 MnT in Mar’18, but 8% higher on the year from 1.45 MnT in Apr’18.
During Jan’18-Apr’18, Russian coal imports totaled 6.1 MnT, down 12% from 6.9 MnT in Jan’17-Apr’17.
