Russian coal exports registered more than 50% fall in coal exports in Jul’16. While yearly exports noted a growth of 6% during the month.
Russia, one of the largest coal exporters in the globe, shipped about 9.5 MnT coal to different destinations in Jul’16. The country’s export was down by 52% on monthly basis. While, yearly imports rose by 6% which was at 19.8 MnT in Jun’15, according to the Russian customs data.
In first seven months (Jan’16-Jul’16) of 2016, country’s export has also rose by 8% to 91.4 MnT which was at 84.78 MnT in 2015 (Jan’15-Jul’15). Besides, the Russian government is also planning to increase its coal production quantity and export by 10 MnT respectively.
Grade-wise coal export in Jul’16
Out of the total exported quantity, more than 70% Bituminous coal shipped by the country every month and rest includes Coking, Anthracite, Coke and other grades.

Quantity in MnT
The country has been exporting more than 40% coal of its total yearly production. In 2015, the country had shipped about 155.6 MnT coal worldwide. Meanwhile, Russian coal output has been rising every year and reached at 373 MnT, which was at 358 MnT in 2014.
Major Export Destinations
Countries like Korea, Japan, China, UK and Netherland are the largest taker of Russian coal. Whilst, in the month of Jul’16 they were imported large quantity from the country.
Korea, largest importer of Russian coal, took about 1.6 MnT coal in Jul’16, down by 13% compared to last month. While, yearly import rose by 49%, which was 1.1 MnT in Jul’15.
Japan, the second-largest coal importer during the month, imported about 0.96 MnT coal in Jul’16, with a sharp fall which is 47%, compared to 1.8 MnT in Jun’16. The nation’s yearly import also down by 3%, which was 0.99 MnT in Jun’15.
China, the third-largest importer of Russian coal in Jul’16, imported about 0.83 MnT coal during the month, declined by 61% in shipments as the country’s import was 2.1 MnT Jun’16. While, import down by 4% Y-o-Y.
