Russia registered a significant growth by 36% in its monthly coal exports in Nov’16. While yearly export noted a marginal decline during the month.
Russia, one of the largest coal exporters in the globe, shipped about 13.2 MnT coal to different destinations in Nov’16. The country’s export has increased by 36% on monthly basis. In contrast, yearly export drop by 1% which was at 13.3 MnT in Nov’15. As per to Russian customs data.
Grade-wise coal export in Nov’16
Out of the total exported quantity, more than 70% Bituminous coal shipped by the country every month and rest includes Coking, Anthracite, Coke and other grades.

Quantity in MnT
In first eleven months (Jan’16-Nov’16) of 2016, country’s export has noted a growth of 7.3% to 148.7 MnT which was at 138.6 MnT in 2015 (Jan’15-Nov’15). Besides, the Russian government is also planning to increase its coal production quantity and exports by 10 MnT respectively.
The country has been exporting more than 40% coal of its total yearly production. In 2015, the country had shipped about 155.6 MnT coal worldwide. Meanwhile, Russian coal output has been rising every year and reached at 373 MnT, which was at 358 MnT in 2014.
Major Export Destinations
Countries like Korea, Japan, China and Turkey are the largest taker of Russian coal. Whilst, in the month of Nov’16 they were imported large quantity from the country.
Korea, largest importer of Russian coal, took about 2 MnT coal in Nov’16; up by 45% compared to last month. While, yearly import rose by 20%, which was 1.7 MnT in Nov’15.
Japan, the second-largest coal importer during the month, imported about 1.8 MnT coal in Nov’16, with a growth of 39%, compared to 1.3 MnT in Oct’16. The nation’s yearly import noted a rise of 17%, which was 1.5 MnT in Nov’15.
China, the third-largest importer of Russian coal in Nov’16, imported about 1.5 MnT coal during the month, recorded an increase of 42% in imports. Country’s import was 1 MnT in Oct’16. While recorded a growth of 6% Y-o-Y.
