Russian Coal Export Jumps 10% Y-o-Y in H1 CY18

Russian coal exports has recorded a remarkable growth during the first half of CY18. According to the data provided by Russian customs, coal exports from the country has increased 10% Y-o-Y to 99.02 MnT in Jan’18-Jun’18 period, against 90.37 MnT in Jan’17-Jun’17.

Since falling on the monthly basis in Apr’18, Russian coal exports have posted back-to-back growth in the past two months.

Coal export in Jun’18 stood 10% higher on the month at 19.85 MnT, compared with 17.97 MnT in May’18. However, export was down 5% on the year from 20.99 MnT in Jun’17, which was the only year-on year fall recorded during the six month period.

Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Russian non-coking coal accounted for three-fourth of the total coal exports in H1 CY18, whose exports had increased 9% Y-o-Y to 74.59 MnT during the period.

Coking coal exports were marked 11.47 MnT in H1 CY18, slightly improving from the corresponding period total of 11.38 MnT in CY17.

Anthracite exports surged 31% Y-o-Y to 10.67 MnT in H1 CY18, compared with 8.15 MnT in H1 CY17.

Major Coal Importers:
South Korea remained the largest coal receiver from Russia in H1 CY18, despite suffering a fall of 8% in imports during the period. South Korea took 12% of the total coal which accounted to 12.05 MnT in H1 CY18.

China was the second-largest coal importer from Russia. The country had imported 11.66 MnT in H1 CY18, which was 12% higher on the year from 10.43 MnT in H1 CY17.

Japan was the third-largest coal importer. Imports by the country stood 8.06 MnT in H1 CY18, up 2% Y-o-Y from 7.89 MnT in H1 CY17.

Russian Coal Imports Down 10% Y-o-Y in H1 CY18:
Russia’s coal import dropped 10% Y-o-Y to 9.23 MnT in H1 CY18 against 10.29 MnT in H1 CY17.

Kazakhstan remained the largest coal supplier to Russia in H1 CY18, but had seen its share falling from 89% to 78% on the yearly basis. While Russia’s coal sourcing from its second-largest supplier-Ukraine had increased 127% Y-o-Y to 1.86 MnT in H1 CY18 compared with 0.82 MnT in H1 CY17.
