Russia registered a significant drop by 42% in its monthly coal exports in Oct’16. While yearly export also noted a marginal decline during the month.
Russia, one of the largest coal exporters in the globe, shipped about 9.8 MnT coal to different destinations in Oct’16. The country’s export has fallen by 42% on monthly basis. While, yearly imports drop by 1% which was at 9.9 MnT in Oct’15. As per to Russian customs data.
Grade-wise coal export in Oct’16
Out of the total exported quantity, more than 70% Bituminous coal shipped by the country every month and rest includes Coking, Anthracite, Coke and other grades.

Quantity in MnT
In first ten months (Jan’16-Oct’16) of 2016, country’s export has noted a growth of 8% to 135.5 MnT which was at 125.2 MnT in 2015 (Jan’15-Oct’15). Besides, the Russian government is also planning to increase its coal production quantity and exports by 10 MnT respectively.
The country has been exporting more than 40% coal of its total yearly production. In 2015, the country had shipped about 155.6 MnT coal worldwide. Meanwhile, Russian coal output has been rising every year and reached at 373 MnT, which was at 358 MnT in 2014.
Major Export Destinations
Countries like Korea, Japan, China and Turkey are the largest taker of Russian coal. Whilst, in the month of Oct’16 they were imported large quantity from the country.
Korea, largest importer of Russian coal, took about 1.3 MnT coal in Oct’16; Down by 49% compared to last month. While, yearly import rose by 26%, which was 1 MnT in Oct’15.
Japan, the second-largest coal importer during the month, imported about 1.2 MnT coal in Oct’16, with a fall of 30%, compared to 1.9 MnT in Sep’16. The nation’s yearly import noted a rise of 24%, which was 1 MnT in Oct’15.
China, the third-largest importer of Russian coal in Oct’16, imported about 1 MnT coal during the month, recorded a fall of 9% in shipments. Country’s import was 1.1 MnT in Sep’16. While recorded a growth of 4% Y-o-Y.
