Russia, the 8th largest exporter of iron ore exported 1.52 MnT iron ore in Feb’18, according to the trade statistics released by Russian Customs. Russian iron ore exports have decreased sharply by 27% M-o-M in Feb’18 as against 2.08 MnT in Jan’18. However, the exports in Feb’18 were in line with exports in Feb’17 at 1.50 MnT.
Falling Russia’s iron ore export volumes to China
Iron ore which is Russia’s major commodity export. However with increasing iron ore supplies from Australia to China; Russia’s iron ore exports to China have come down over the past years. Russia exported 5.02 MnT iron ore to China in CY17 compared to 7.81 MnT in CY15.
In the duration Jan-Feb’18, Russian iron ore exports were recorded at 3.6 MnT, up 17% against same time period last fiscal (Jan-Feb’17) at 3.08 MnT. China stood the largest importer at 0.8 MnT (up 63% Y-o-Y), followed by Finland at 0.46 MnT (up more than thrice Y-o-Y), and Ukraine at 0.42 MnT ( up by three fold Y-o-Y).
Agglomerated iron ore (pellets and concentrate) exports decreased by 25% M-o-M to 1.22 MnT in Feb’18 against 1.63 MnT in Jan’18. However, on yearly basis the exports increased by 36% in Feb’18 as compared to 0.9 MnT in Feb’17.
Non-agglomerated iron ore (lumps & fines) exports reduced by 32% M-o-M to 0.3 MnT in Feb’18 compared to 0.44 MnT in Jan’18. The Y-o-Y exports in Feb’18 declined to almost half the exports in Feb’17 which stood at 0.6 MnT.
Russian Iron ore exports to China declined 22% in Feb’18-
China stood the largest importer of iron ore from Russia in Feb’18 at 0.35 MnT, contributing 23% of total share of Russian exports (down 22% M-o-M), followed by Ukraine at 0.28 MnT(twice the imports in Jan’18), and Turkey at 0.23 MnT(up 77% M-o-M ).
Exports to Ukraine and Turkey, the second and third largest importer for CY’17, marked remarkable rise in monthly imports in Feb’18 at 0.28 MnT at 0.23 MnT respectively.
