Russia: Ferrous Scrap Exports Shrink 7% in 2017

Russia- one of the world’s major scrap exporters has witnessed fourth consecutive fall in its yearly ferrous scrap exports in 2017 since 2014. As per recently released customs data, Russia exported 4.98 MnT ferrous scrap during 2017 as against 5.33 MnT ferrous scrap exports recorded in 2016. Thus, yearly scrap exports have fallen below 5 MnT the first time since 2014 registering a marginal fall of 7% Y-o-Y in 2017.

Russia is world’s fourth largest ferrous scrap exporter after EU-28, USA and Japan. Russian ferrous scrap exports stood at 5.68 MnT in 2014, 5.57 MnT in 2015 and 5.33 MnT in 2016 respectively.

Russia exported 0.54 MnT ferrous scrap in Dec’17, up significantly by 38% M-o-M as against 0.39 MnT exports in Nov’17. However, ferrous scrap exports registered a fringe rise of 2% Y-o-Y against 0.53 MnT ferrous scrap in Dec’16.

During the second half of CY17, Russia exported 2.98 MnT ferrous scrap recording 49% rise against 2.00 MnT in H1-2017. Also, exports in H2-CY17 moved up 6% against 2.80 MnT exports in H2-2016.

Russia witnessed fall in ferrous scrap exports by 13% Q-o-Q in Q4-CY17. As against 1.59 MnT exports in Q3-CY17, Russian ferrous scrap exports stood at 1.39 MnT in Q4-CY17.

Major scrap loading ports in Russia are North-West Federal district, Far East Federal district, Central Federal district and Southern Federal district.

Turkey’s scrap imports from Russia declined 4% in CY17 –

Turkey imported highest 2.35 MnT ferrous scrap from Russia occupying 47% share of total scrap exports. Its import volumes fell 4% in CY17 against 2.46 MnT in CY16. Turkey which occupies the largest share in Russia scrap exports has reported fall in volumes in CY17 as the country has increased scrap imports from countries like US, UK, Netherlands etc.

Belarus (1.07 MnT, +5% Y-o-Y) emerged as the second largest importer surpassing South Korea (1.00 MnT, -9% Y-o-Y) as third largest importer of Russian ferrous scrap. Spain registered 45% Y-o-Y fall at 0.23 MnT imports in 2017 against 0.42 MnT in 2016. Followed by other major importers as Egypt (0.06 MnT) and Portugal (0.04 MnT) respectively.

In Dec’17, Russia supplied the highest share of ferrous scrap exports to Turkey (0.35 MnT, 84% M-o-M) followed by South Korea (0.08 MnT), Belarus (0.04 MnT) and Spain (0.02 MnT) respectively.

Fall in scrap imports could be attributed to increased scrap export offers and slightly lowered demand from major importers in 2017. While domestic scrap demand moved up with the marginal increase in crude steel production in Russia at 71.34 MnT in 2017 as against 70.45 MnT in 2016.
