Russia: Coal Exports Up 4% M-o-M in Sep’17

Russian coal export has increased 4% M-o-M to 17.59 MnT in Sep’17 against 16.84 MnT in Aug’17, according to the customs data. Coal export was also around 4% higher on the year compared with the export total of 16.94 MnT recorded in Sep’16.

Total coal exported by Russia during Jan’17-Sep’17 has gone up by 8% Y-o-Y to 135.33 MnT, in comparison with 125.64 MnT coal exported during the same period in CY16.

Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Russian Non-coking coal exports stood 13.18 MnT in Sep’17, contributing about 75% in the total exports. Non-coking coal exports increased 5% M-o-M compared with 12.52 MnT in Aug’17. Coking coal exports were up 7% M-o-M to 2.22 MnT during the month.

Apart from these two major exported coal grades, exports of Anthracite, Met coke and Pet coke had fallen during the month.

Major Coal Exporters:
South Korea remained the top coal importer in Sep’17, despite recording a decline of 23% M-o-M in coal imports from Russia. Korea had received 1.98 MnT coal in Sep’17 which was also down 30% Y-o-Y compared with 2.84 MnT in Sep’16.

China was the second-largest coal importer during the month. Chinese coal imports had fell 18% M-o-M to 1.91 MnT in Sep’17, but were still 68% higher on the year compared with 1.14 MnT in Sep’16.

Turkey received 1.7 MnT coal from Russia to become the third-largest coal importer in Sep’17. Monthly imports had increased 31% compared with 1.3 MnT in Aug’17. While on the yearly basis, imports jumped 52% Y-o-Y compared with 1.12 MnT in Sep’16.

Russian Coal Imports:
Russian monthly coal import has drastically reduced to 0.38 MnT in Sep’17, down 81% M-o-M compared with 1.97 MnT in Aug’17. According to the customs data, Russia had not received coal shipment from Kazakhstan during the month, with majority of coal imported from Ukraine this term.

So far, Russia has imported 14.44 MnT coal during Jan’17-Sep’17, with Kazakhstan supplying 12.17 MnT coal during the period.
