Russian coal export has increased 31% on the month to 15.26 MnT in Feb’18, against 11.68 MnT in Jan’18, on the back of significant improvement in coal shipments to UK and Netherlands during the month. Coal export in Feb’18 was also 19% higher on the year compared with the exports of 12.82 MnT recorded in Feb’17.
Russia has posted higher gains in exports on the year-on-year basis, during the first two months of the CY18. As per the data provided by customs, coal export from the country has increased 19% Y-o-Y to 26.94 MnT in Jan’18-Feb’18, compared with the 22.67 MnT in Jan’17-Feb’17 period.
Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Exports of all the major coal grades had increased on the monthly basis, except Met coke, whose exports had fallen 42% on the month to 0.18 MnT in Feb’18.
Russian non-coking coal exports rose 37% M-o-M to 11.72 MnT in Feb’18. Coking coal shipments too were marked slightly higher on the month at 1.74 MnT.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Importers:
China emerged as the largest importer of Russian coal in Feb’18. Chinese coal imports increased 37% M-o-M to 1.95 MnT in Feb’18, which were also 25% higher on the year compared with 1.56 MnT in Feb’17.
UK and Netherlands had witnessed significant improvement in coal buying from Russia on the monthly basis.
UK was the second-largest coal receiver of Russian coal, with total imports of 1.86 MnT in Feb’18. Import by the country had surged 226% M-o-M from 0.57 MnT in Jan’18, which was also 205% higher on the year than the levels attained Feb’17.
Netherlands coal imports totaled 1.21 MnT in Feb’18, up 109% M-o-M from 0.58 MnT in Jan’18. Netherlands was the fourth-largest importer of Russian coal, behind South Korea, whose imports had fallen 16% on the month to 1.32 MnT.
Japan, Ukraine, Turkey, Poland and Germany were among the other major coal importer during the month.

Russian Coal Import in Feb’18:
Russian coal imports remain depressed in Feb’18. As per the customs data, coal imports had fallen to its lowest monthly total in Feb’18 since CY13, the period upto which CoalMint has maintained Russian coal import data.
Russia’s coal import was marked 0.97 MnT in Feb’18, down 45% M-o-M from 1.77 MnT in Jan’18. The country had sourced majority of its coal shipments from Kazakhstan (0.66 MnT).
