Russia, world’s third-largest coal exporter, has registered growth in exports during the half yearly period of CY17, compared with the exports in the first half of CY16.
The country has exported 90.37 MnT coal during Jan’17-Jun’17, thereby recording a growth of 10% Y-o-Y compared with 81.87 MnT in Jan’16-Jun’16.
Monthly export in Jun’17 was recorded highest during the 2016-17 duration, and was recorded at 20.99 MnT. Exports in Jun’17 increased 26% M-o-M compared with 16.69 MnT in May’17, which was also 6% higher on the year compared with 19.82 MnT in Jun’16.
Grade-wise Coal exports:
Non-coking coal export, having a share of 76% in the country’s total exports, has increased 7% Y-o-Y to 68.72 MnT in H1 CY17. The country had exported 64.1 MnT Non-coking coal in H1 CY16.
Coking coal was the second-largest exported coal grade in H1 CY17, export of this coal increased 13% Y-o-Y to 11.38 MnT.
Exports of Other major coal grades have also shown growth during the half year period.

Major Coal Importers:
South Korea remained the highest coal importer from Russia during H1 CY17, followed by China, Japan, UK and Turkey.
South Korean Coal imports have increased 18% Y-o-Y to 13.14 MnT in H1 CY17, compared with 11.14 MnT in H1 CY16.
China became the second-largest coal imported during H1 CY17, with 30% growth in exports. China had imported 10.43 MnT coal in H1 CY17 against 8 MnT in H1 CY16.
Japan fell to the third spot among largest coal importer in H1 CY17, after witnessing decline of 5% in coal exports.
Russian Coal Exports Affected by Rail Line Disruptions:
Russian thermal coal exports to Asia-Pacific region are facing shipment delay on account of the devastating flooding to the rail links.
Coal exports from Russia’s Pacific port of Vostochny and its adjacent port of Maly are directly affected as a result of floods interrupting rail shipments.
While, some of the coal shipments have been shifted to Vanino port, but the declining stockpile at the port would not be sustained too long for exports.
The recent series of disruptions would affect buyers’ from Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and China.
Russian coal imports remained stable during H1 CY17:
Russia coal imports have been seen stable during the first half of CY17 (Jan’17-Jun’17) at 10.3 MnT compared with 10.28 MnT during Jan’16-Jun’16.
Kazakhstan, the major coal exporter, had a share of 89% in total coal export to Russia. Kazakhstan coal imports decreased 3% Y-o-Y to 9.21 MnT in H1 CY17, compared with 9.46 MnT in H1 CY16.
While coal supplies from second –largest coal exporter, Ukraine, was recorded at 0.83 MnT during H1 CY17.
