Russian coal export has fallen to its 6-month lowest total in Jul’18. As per the data provided by Russian customs, coal export from the country has slumped to 11.83 MnT in Jul’18, declining 40% M-o-M from 19.85 MnT in Jun’18.
Russian coal supplies to all its major coal receivers had dropped on the monthly basis. However, the country’s exports in Jul’18 were still 12% higher on the year than 10.52 MnT recorded in Jul’17.
During the first 7 months of CY18 (Jan’18-Jul’18), the country has so far exported 110.84 MnT coal, up 10% Y-o-Y from 100.89 MnT recorded in Jan’17-Jul’17 period.
Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Export of all the major coal grades were down on the month in Jul’18, except Pet Coke.
Export of Non-coking coal was down 45% M-o-M to 7.96 MnT in Jul’18, compared with 14.38 MnT in Jun’18. Anthracite export decreased 25% M-o-M to 1.94 MnT, Coking coal export was down 36% M-o-M to 1.58 MnT in Jul’18.
Pet coke export witnessed slight increase on the month as it grew to 0.16 MnT in Jul’18 against 0.15 MnT in Jun’18.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Importers:
South Korea remained the largest coal receiver from Russia in Jul’18, despite suffering a 32% drop in imports during the month. Korean imports were recorded at 1.61 MnT in Jul’18 against 2.38 MnT in Jun’18, but were 53% higher on the year from 1.05 MnT in Jul’17.
Coal import by Russia’s second-largest importer-China had decreased 30% M-o-M to 1.6 MnT, but was up 36% Y-o-Y from 1.18 MnT in Jul’17.
Japan become the third-largest coal receiver with imports of 1.34 MnT in Jul’18, replacing Taiwan, whose monthly imports had fallen 70% on the month to 0.51 MnT in Jul’18.
Poland, Ukraine, Germany, and Netherlands were among the other major receivers of Russian coal in Jul’18.

Russian Coal Import in Jul’18:
Coal import by Russia saw a marginal increase of 1.28% on the month to 1.58 MnT in Jul’18 against 1.56 MnT in Jun’18. Kazakhstan accounted for 80% of the total monthly coal, supplying 1.28 MnT coal to Russia in the month.
So far during the first 7-month period in CY18, Russian coal imports have totaled 10.81 MnT, down 11% Y-o-Y from 12.1 MnT recorded in same period last year.
