Russia: Coal Exports Down 34% M-o-M in Jan’18

According to the data provided by the Russian customs, coal exports from the country has fallen 34% on the month to 11.68 MnT in Jan’18 compared with 17.7 MnT in Dec’18. On the yearly basis, export had increased 19% from 9.85 MnT in Jan’17.

Russia had exported 184.2 MnT coal during CY17, which was 9% higher on the year compared with 169.12 MnT in CY16.

Grade-wise Coal Exports:
During Jan’18, exports of all the major coal grades from Russia had fallen on the monthly basis, except for Met coke, whose exports had increased 48% M-o-M to 0.31 MnT.

Non-coking coal exports fell 33% M-o-M to 8.55 MnT; Coking coal export was down 20% M-o-M to 1.7 MnT in Jan’18.

Anthracite and Pet coke had also witnessed a similar fall of 58% and 61% respectively, in Jan’18.

Major Coal Importers:
South Korea overtook China to become the largest coal importer from Russia in Jan’18. South Korean coal imports were recorded 1.58 MnT in Jan’18, almost unchanged from the previous month, but were 11% lower on the year compared with 1.77 MnT in Jan’17.

Chinese coal import was down 48% on the month to 1.42 MnT in Jan’18 compared with 2.71 MnT in Dec’17. However, on the yearly basis, country’s import had increased 49% from 0.95 MnT in Dec’17.

Turkey was the third-largest coal receiver, with imports of 1.07 MnT in Jan’18.

Russian Coal Imports in Jan’18:
Russian coal imports totaled 1.77 MnT in Jan’18, down 32% on the month compared with 2.61 MnT in Dec’17, which was also 11% lower on the year compared with 1.98 MnT in Jan’17.

The country had procured 86% of the total monthly imports from Kazakhstan in Jan’18.
