Russian coal exports have dropped 22% on the month in Oct’18. The decline thereby had ended the country’s rising streak for exports witnessed in the past two months.
As per the data provided by Russian customs, the country had exported 15.31 MnT coal in Oct’18 against 19.74 MnT in Sep’18. Exports, however, maintained the growth on the year-on-year basis in Oct’18, by posting a 20% increase from 12.79 MnT in Oct’17.
Russia’s total coal export in the first 10 months of CY18 (Jan’18-Oct’18), in fact, has grown 11% Y-o-Y to 164.64 MnT, compared with 148.11 MnT noted in the same period last year.
Grade-wise Exports:
The month of Oct’18 had seen decline in exports of the major coal grades.
Russian non-coking coal exports decreased 26% M-o-M to 9.66 MnT in Oct’18; while coking coal exports had fell 12% on the month to 2.76 MnT. Also, a 20% decline was noted in Anthracite coal exports.
On the other hand, monthly growth were noticed in Met coke and Pet coke exports, which were marked at 0.25 MnT and 0.21 MnT respectively in Oct’18.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Importers:
Ukraine emerged as the largest coal receiver from Russia in Oct’18, as the upcoming bitter frost forces the country to boost its imports. Import stood 38% higher on the month at 2.16 MnT in Oct’18, which was also 192% higher on the year from 0.74 MnT in Oct’17.
Notably, Ukraine’s coal import from Russia had crossed the 2 MnT mark for the first time over the 2017-18 period, and had noted the only gain in monthly imports among the other major coal receivers during Oct’18.
South Korean coal imports fell 28% on the month to 1.95 MnT in Oct’18, but were 8% higher on the year from 1.8 MnT in Oct’17.
China was the third-largest coal receiver in Oct’18. The country’s import slightly came down on the month to 1.87 MnT against 1.88 MnT in Sep’18, which was also 9% lower on the year from 2.05 MnT in Oct’17.
Germany, Poland, Turkey and Japan were the other major coal importers in Oct’18.

Russia Coal Imports in Oct’18:
Russian coal imports continued its downtrend in Oct’18, as it fell 11% M-o-M to 1.54 MnT in Oct’18 which was also 22% lower on the year from 1.97 MnT in Oct’17.
Kazakhstan (1.17 MnT) and Ukraine (0.33 MnT) had major share in Russian imports during Oct’18.
Russia’s total imports in the first 10-months of CY18 has fallen 10% Y-o-Y to 15.93 MnT as against 17.76 MnT recorded in the corresponding period of CY17.
