Russia Achieves Coal Export Target for CY16

Russia has achieved its annual coal export target of 165 MnT for CY16.

Russia, the third largest coal exporter, exported 169.12 MnT in CY16. Coal exports have increased by 9% compared with 155.62 MnT in CY15. Monthly exports have also risen by 32% M-o-M to 19.21 MnT in Dec’16. As per data from Russian customs.

Growth in coal exports has resulted from the increased coal production in the country, which has been rising steadily since 2001, except for 2002 when Siberian hydroelectric power abruptly increased and demand for coal decreased.

Grade-wise Coal Exports in 2016:
Russia exports more than 70% of Bituminous coal to different destinations followed by Coking coal, Coke, Anthracite, Pet coke and other grades of coal.

During CY16, exports of Bituminous, Coking coal and Pet coke improved over the year. While Anthracite and Coke exports decline by 8% and 10% respectively.

Coal Exports in 2016:
Russian Ministry of Energy earlier proposed to increase its annual coal output.Russia’s total coal output reached to 373 MnT in 2015 which was at 358.2 MnT in 2014.

The government had anticipated increasing its coal production by 10 Mnt and a similar increase in yearly coal exports by 10 MnT in 2016, which they have achieved by exporting 169.12 MnT in CY16.

Major Importing Countries in 2016:
South Korea recorded as the major coal importer from Russia followed by Japan, China, UK, Turkey and Ukraine.

South Korea imports 24.77 MnT coal in CY16 up by 28% compared with 19.33 MnT in 2015.

Germany’s coal import from Russia saw major improvement by 31% in CY16. While UK coal imports fell by 35% Y-o-Y.
