RINL Commissions’ 5th Coke Oven Battery

Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), the state-owned and corporate entity has commissioned its 5th coke oven battery on July 5, 2019, with the light-up of the chimney of the battery, built at an investment of INR 2500 crore.

Vishakhapatnam Steel Plant’s Chairman Mr. P.K.Rath launched the commissioning activities of the new coke oven battery-5 (COB-5) which is mainly constructed to cater to the coke requirement of 6.3 MTPA of liquid steel capacity.

At present, RINL has four coke oven batteries producing 2.48 MnT blast furnace grade coke. The coke requirement for the blast furnaces (net and dry) for 6.5 million tons per annum (MTPA) capacity has been estimated at 2.88 MTPA with 15% ash content.

The COB-5 was constructed similar to the existing ones (COB 1-4) with a total production capacity of 8.40 lakh tonnes of blast furnace grade coke per year. The coke oven battery-5 will generate 14 MW of power through a waste heat recovery project as well.

The COB-5 is based on Ukrainian Technology and is constructed by M/s Bhilai Engineering Corporation (BEC) and consortium partner M/s Giprokoks(Ukraine).

Current Situation
On 5th July 2019, Chimney heating is started for the next 60 days, after which heating of Coke Oven Battery will start. Once the Chimney heating is done, the main battery is moved for temporary heating for maximum of 90 days. After this, coal will be charged in ovens and production will start.

Quenching system
RINL’s coke ovens have dry quenching facilities which are known as Coke Dry Cooling Plant. It’s the same technology done by M/s Giprokoks and executed by M/s Bhilai Engineering Corporation. The technology is used to heat the burning coke to produce superheated saturated steam for power generation.

The current coke oven plant is about to start after 4 months from now as per the RINL officials and the Project contractor. The date and time are tentative based on the current construction of the plant.
