Coal Exports from Richards Bay Coal Terminal have been falling persistently.
Richards’s Bay Coal Terminal, South Africa’s premier bulk port is responsible for handling the country’s major exports. Exports from RBCT have decreased by 11% M-o-M to 5.34 MnT in Feb’17.
Coal Exports from RBCT has been falling continuously over the month. Exports went down by 4% M-o-M to about 6 MnT in Jan’17 as compared to 6.26 MnT in Dec’16. In Feb’17 again the exports have fallen by 11% M-o-M and have reached around 5.34 MnT.
Fall in global demand for South African coal is the main reason behind the recent decline in exports.
Major importers such as Netherlands, Korea, Argentina, Pakistan and Vietnam, which received the major share of coal shipments from RBCT in Dec’16, have lowered their coal imports over the month.

Major Importing Countries in Feb’17:
India has remained the preferred destination for South African coal. Coal imports have increased on monthly basis.
India imported 1.88 MnT in Feb’17 from RBCT, which have increased by 6% M-o-M compared with 1.78 MnT in Jan’17. While, imports have gone up by 70% in Feb’17 in comparison to 1.11 MnT in Dec’16.
Taiwan is the second largest importers to receive 0.39 MnT coal shipments from RBCT in Feb’17, followed by Spain which received 0.38 MnT, Pakistan 0.33 MnT, Gibraltar 0.30 MnT and Korea 0.22 MnT respectively.
