Pet coke dispatch analysis from IndianOil’s Paradip refinery

After commissioning of rake loading facility in Nov’18, the supply by rake has gradually increased. Earlier Pet coke supply at Paradip refinery started from Dec’2015 which was having road dispatch facility only. The customers were facing several issues like very high road transportation rates and other unfavorable circumstances due to local unions.

With clear advantage of rake loading facility, the share of rail supply has increased as compared to road supply. Thus, the dependency on road movement gradually came down. This has also indirectly taken care of various issues to a great extent which were being faced by consumers by local transport union.

The rake dispatches attracted long distant consumers, due to much lower freight as compared to road transportation charges. These supplies were earlier infeasible and uneconomical by road. Therefore, it has benefited both supplier and buyer.

The number of rakes of Pet coke dispatched during FY2021 as compared to FY 1920 is represented here.

Notably the all-time highest 31 number rakes of Pet coke were dispatched in Jul’20. In most of the months during current FY the dispatch of rakes are more as compared to last year except in Aug’20 due to shut down of DCU (Delayed Coker Unit) from which Pet coke is produced. In Sept it picked up again after restarting of DCU and crossed the last year level Oct &Nov’20.

On an average the number of rakes supplied in FY 2021 is 19.5 per month as compared to 14.4 rakes per month of last year. This gives a growth of 35% in number of rakes dispatched. Notably, the dispatch is higher even during Covid period as compared to last year as it was preferred by many customers to uplift by rake.

The refinery has now started producing Pet coke in full capacity of approx. 100-110 kt per month. The dispatch by rake has reached to nearly 75-80% and remaining by road.
