Coal Demand in Pakistan:
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources has stated that Pakistan is producing 3.5 MnT coal and importing 4-5 MnT coal every year to meet needs of different sectors like steel, cement and power generation.
In a bid to produce cheap electricity, the government is designing a plan aimed at slapping a ban on the consumption of furnace oil and high-speed diesel in electricity production and permitting only coal and imported gas as fuel.
Moreover, the government has decided to lift the ban on setting up new power plants based on imported fuel in an attempt to resume and step up work on an abandoned imported coal-fired project planned under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) in order to meet energy demands in the country.
So far, the country has imported 3.35 MnT Non-Coking Coal during Jan’17-May’17.
