Pakistan: Monthly Coal Imports Surge in Apr’17

Pakistan coal imports have gone up remarkably by 91% M-o-M in Apr’17.

Pakistan has increased its monthly coal imports to 1.59 MnT in Apr’17 from 0.83 MnT in Mar’17, according to the data collected by CoalMint Research and Pakistan Customs.

Pakistan Government has encouraged coal imports into the country in order to overcome the country’s power crisis which is expected to increase during the summer season when the country faces power shortage of more than 6000 MW.

Also, China has decided to invest USD 55 Billion for infrastructure development projects in Pakistan under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). More than 60% of this investment has been committed for energy projects, hence coal imports into the country are expected to increase further.

Major Exporting Countries:
Pakistan majorly imports Non-coking coal for operating power stations. South Africa, Indonesia and Russia fulfil the coal needs of Pakistan, with South Africa supplying the majority of the coal.

However, In Apr’17 Pakistan has also received coal shipments of 0.07 MnT from Mozambique.

Coal exports from South Africa increased by 53% M-o-M to 1.08 MnT in Apr’17.

Indonesia has shown significant improvement in monthly exports to Pakistan, with exports increasing 6 times to 0.32 MnT in Apr’17 compared with 0.05 MnT in Mar’17.
