Pakistan: Ferrous Scrap Imports Surge 28% in Jan’18

With upcoming capacities of steel melting units, Pakistan is increasing its ferrous scrap imports. Ferrous scrap imports to the country are expected to touch 5-6 MnT in 2017-18 against 4-5 MnT in previous fiscal.

According to the data of major ports in Pakistan maintained with SteelMint, the country has witnessed rise in its ferrous scrap imports in January month as against ferrous scrap imports in Dec’17 despite high global scrap prices.

As per data, Pakistan imported 393,676 MT ferrous scrap in Jan’18 as against 306,745 MT ferrous scrap imports during Dec’17 registering significant growth of 28% M-o-M in Jan’18. Notably, scrap imports recorded in Jan’18 hit last 8 months’ high since Jun’17.

United Kingdom scrap exports to Pakistan climb 63% in Jan’18 –
In Jan’18, United Kingdom remained the largest supplier to Pakistan. United Kingdom supplied highest 87,338 MT ferrous scrap occupying 22% share in total ferrous scrap imports to Pakistan. Followed by other major exporters like United Arab Emirates (83,467 MT, +19% M-o-M), United States (47,186 MT, -8% M-o-M), South Africa (40,183 MT, +40% M-o-M) and Kuwait (17,378 MT, +32% M-o-M) respectively.

Amreli Steels remained Pakistan’s largest scrap importer in Jan’18 –
In Jan’18, Amreli Steels Ltd imported highest 19,106 MT ferrous scrap followed by other major importers of Pakistan as Agha Steel industries Ltd (16,389 MT), Black Gold Industry (16,238 MT), ASG Metals Ltd (11,959 MT) and Hamna Industries (10,289 MT) respectively.

Midas Global remained the largest consignor to Pakistan in Jan’18 –
In Jan’18, Midas Global Ltd remained the largest consignor and supplied 20,781 MT ferrous scrap followed by other major consignors like European Metal Recycling Ltd (18,406 MT), Donald Ward Ltd (10,082 MT), Sims group global trade corporation (9,391 MT) and Global Metcorp Ltd(8,433 MT) respectively.

Pakistan imported scrap prices soar sharply on recent trades –
Pakistan scrap importers remained strong in containerized thin trades since 2-3 weeks. Few thin trades for Shredded 211 concluded in the market recently pushed prices further up by USD 10-15/MT on W-o-W basis. UK origin Shredded 211 scrap in containers sold around USD 395-397/MT, CFR Pakistan.
