Pakistan: Coal Imports Up 9% M-o-M in Nov’18

According to the vessel line-up data compiled by CoalMint Research, Pakistan’s coal imports have increased 9% on the month to 1,017,339 MT in Nov’18 against 933,906 MT in Oct’18.

Coal imports have rebounded in Nov’18 after declining for the past 3-months, but were still 7% lower on the year from 1,096,763 MT in Nov’17.

The county’s imports have been subdued for the past few months affected by the currency depreciation, while the demand for imported fuel was also lowered by the newly formed government coming into reign.

Coal receipt by the country’s power sector have reached a 5-month low of 440,260 MT in Nov’18, while only a slight increase in cement sector’s procurement was noted on the month to 180,081 MT in Nov’18 against 178,551 MT in Oct’18.

Pakistan’s yearly coal imports, which have already surpassed the CY17 total, have reached 13,546,410 MT in the 11-months period of CY18 (Jan’18-Nov’18), up 37% Y-o-Y from 9,870,265 MT in same period year-ago.

Country-wise Coal Imports:

Pakistan’s coal sourcing from South Africa increased 4% on the month to 692,088 MT in Nov’18, but was 3% lower on the year from 714,523 MT in Nov’17.

Imports from Indonesia had fell 2% M-o-M to 266,150 MT in Nov’18, but were slightly higher on the year from 265,080 MT in Nov’17.

Apart from its traditional coal markets, Pakistan had also sourced a coal shipment from Canada for the first time in its history. The shipment of 59,101 MT from Canada was procured by a cement company.
