Pakistan: Coal Imports Up 34% M-o-M in Nov’17

According to the Vessel line-up data maintained by CoalMint research, Pakistan’s coal import has increased 34% M-o-M to 1,096,763 MT in Nov’17 against 817,100 MT in Oct’17.

Pakistan’s Coal Imports have been rising this year, on account of the various infrastructure projects sanctioned under CPEC(China-Pakistan Economic Corridor), which also includes development of various power projects in the country.

Pakistan has imported 9,870,265 MT coal in CY17 during the Jan’17-Nov’17 period.

Major Coal Exporters in Nov’17
Pakistan has been sourcing most of its coal from South Africa and Indonesia. However, the country has also reported coal shipments from the USA, for the very first time.

Coal shipments from South Africa rose 19% M-o-M to 714,523 MT, while shipments from Indonesia rose 23% M-o-M to 265,080 MT in Nov’17.

The remaining share of coal had been sourced from Russia and USA, with Russia supplying 58,960 MT and shipments from the USA were recorded at 58,200 MT.

Major Coal Receivers:
Huaneng Shandong Ruyi operator of Sahiwal Power Plant received the major coal shipments during the month followed by Awan Trading, Port Qasim Electric power.

Recent Development:
Prime Minister of Pakistan has recently inaugurated the second of the major energy under the CPEC. Sahiwal power plant was the first to be developed under the project.

The first unit of Port Qasim Coal-fired plant of 660 MW has gone on stream, which has an estimated capacity of 1320 MW (2 X 660 MW).

According to the data available with CoalMint Research, the plant has been stocking coal for the plants’ operation, and has imported 406,000 MT coal during Jul’17-Nov’17.
