Coal imports in Pakistan are expected to surge to significantly levels in the future as growing demand for steel, power and cement, among others, in that country will trigger higher coal imports.
Around 5 MnT of coal is imported annually in that country to meet the demand, which is in excess of the domestic coal supply at 3.5 MnT.
Despite the prospect of imports going up in that country, there is also ample potential for the domestic production rise. Geological investigations have shown that around 186 BnT of coal reserves were available in the country, and that could be mined to utilize in commercial purposes. There are 19 coalfields in the country discovered till date.
In Pakistan, the favourite countries of coal import are: Afghanistan, Australia, Canada, Indonesia South Africa and USA.
