Pakistan Coal Imports Slip by 31% in Sep’16

Pakistan witnessed a significant fall in its Sep’16 coal imports by 31%, compared with Aug’16. While the country had received about 0.4 MnT coal in Sep’16, which was stood at 0.6 MnT in Aug’16.

Pakistan, majorly sourced coal from South Africa and Indonesia every month. Indonesia, largest supplier to Pakistan shipped o.21 MnT coal in Sep’16 with a marginal growth of 1% compared to last month. South Africa, 2nd largest coal supplier to the country exported about 0.21 MnT coal with a notable fall of 47% compared with Aug’16.

Coal Imports in Pakistan requires Sepa Approval 
In Pakistan, the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (Sepa) has made its approval mandatory for imports of coal in Pakistan,  which will be applicable from Monday. The initiatives has been taken by the government on the wake of public health hazards being created by improper transportation, dumping and handling of coal etc.

The final written updates would be formally sent to the heads of the Karachi Port Trust and Port Qasim Authority and asked them not to deal with coal importers without permission from Sepa.

Meanwhile, for coal imports in Pakistan, it would be mandatory for all importers to take no-objection certificate from Sepa.
