Pakistan: Cement buyers relying on nearby markets amid elevated imported coal prices

Amid elevated global thermal coal prices and a 14% currency depreciation since Mar’22, Pakistan’s cement manufacturers who relied on imported coal are now buying coal from Afghanistan and Tajikistan. Only power plants are opting for Indonesian coal which is low in volatile matter and ash content. Indonesian coal, earlier sold at a premium, is now available at index rates.
