Pakistan bulk scrap imports increase in Aug’17 according to data maintained by SteelMint. Four bulk scrap vessels were recorded in the month of August carrying a total tonnage of 109,680 MT. In July, four bulk vessels were recorded which carried 106,992 MT of melting scrap. In June, one bulk vessel was recorded of 27,400 MT, which was imported by Mughal steel.
“Pakistan is conventionally a containerized market but steel mills have shown interest in bulk cargoes owing to rising demand and price difference between containerized and bulk scrap. Mughal steel is the single largest importer of bulk scrap. Other mills jointly bring bulk vessels and distribute among themselves.”said a local source based in Pakistan.
Notably steel production is increasing in Pakistan due to infrastructural development which has increased the steel demand in double digits. Pakistan is one of the fastest growing countries in terms of steel production. Currently country has an installed steel making capacity of 6 million tonnes, which is likely to increase to 7-7.5 million tonnes next year.
In similar lines, scrap imports are likely to increase from 4-5 million tonnes to 5-6 million tonnes next year.
