Pakistan Bulk Coal Import Increased in May’18

Pakistan bulk imports increased by 20% M-o-M with rise in demand of coal from power and cement sector. Total 1.3 MnT coal was imported in May’18 against 1 MnT in Apr’18.

Coal import is supported by increase in coal demand from Power and Cement sector. In May, coal imports from power sector were up by 37% and cement 23% M-o-M.

There is 17% fall in import of South Africa coal with 100% increase in import from Mozambique and UAE.

As per South African custom, May export from country to Pakistan fell by 17%, decrease in export is owing to high import in last 3 month (2.7 MnT) and increase in coal price is also another reason.

As per vessel line up data, no scrap import shipment was recorded in the month of May. Bulk scrap import in June expected to remain silent as no fresh deals were heard. One HRC shipment of 17,800 MT is recorded at Qasim port.

SteelMint Analysis for June Bulk Import

1. Coal Import from Indonesia in May’18 up by 190% M-o-M.

2. Coal import at Qasim port (1 MnT) was highest in CY 2018.

3. First time coal import vessel recorded from UAE, shipper was Trafigura PTE UAE.

4. Port Qasim Electric Power and Huaneng Shandong Ruyi import up by 30% and 20% respectively, total may import (0.3 MnT) for both the company was highest in CY 2018.

5. Approximately 0.74 MnT and 037 MnT of coal is import by power and cement sector in may.
