- China’s top coal miners see slight Aug output decline
- Shanxi Coking Coal output hit by accident-linked suspension
Mysteel Global: The combined raw coal output of China’s top ten mining companies totalled 199.97 million tonnes (mnt) in August, down by a small 0.5% from July, Mysteel Global calculated based on the year-to-date data from the China National Coal Association (CNCA).
China Energy Investment Corporation remained the country’s top coal producer last month, though its output dipped by 0.8% from July, the data showed. Last month, saleable coal production of China Shenhua Energy Co., Ltd., a major listed arm of China Energy, declined by 2.4% from July, as reported, which contributed to the drop in the parent company’s overall output.
Among the four companies that registered on-month falls in output, Shanxi Coking Coal Group predicted a further decline this month as production at a mine it owns was suspended over August 29-September 11 after a fatal accident on August 28, the company had announced at the time.
The mine, located in North China’s Lvliang city, Shanxi province, has a capacity of 4 mnt/year, accounting for 8.2% of the company’s total. Shanxi Coking Coal estimated that the two-week suspension had led to a total output loss of around 180,000 tonnes (t).
Over January-August, the top ten companies’ raw coal production reached 1.58 billion tonnes, up 2.1% from the year-ago level, according to the CNCA’s numbers. The volume was equivalent to 49.68% of China’s total production of 3.17 billion tonnes over the same period, the CNCA noted.
