Odisha Pips Other States in Mineral Production Value

Odisha has the highest share among all states in terms of value of mineral production in the country. The state has consistently emerged as the leader between 2011-12 and 2015-16 in mineral production on value terms.

In 2015-16, Odisha’s mineral production was valued at INR 29528.57 crore and this accounted for a share of 14.16% in the country’s overall value. Data collated by the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) says 13 states accounted for about 97.74% of total estimated value of mineral production in India. Odisha lead the major states with a share of 14.16% followed by Jharkhand (11.62%), Rajasthan (10.88%), Madhya Pradesh (7.49%), Chhattisgarh (6.36%), Gujarat (4.92%), Assam (4.44%), Telangana (4.00%), Maharashtra (2.84%), Tamil Nadu (2.55%), Karnataka (1.97%), West Bengal (1.69%) in the total value of mineral production.

State-wise analysis revealed that during 2015-16, the value of mineral production have shown a mixed trend as compared to that in the previous year. The principal mineral production have increased in the states of Odisha, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana and decreased in the States of Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Assam, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, West Bengal and Meghalaya, states the Economic Survey of Odisha for 2016-17.

Between 2011-12 and 2015-16, the value of mineral production in Odisha reached its peak in FY14 at INR 54281.60 crore when the state contributed 24.05% in value terms.

Exports of minerals and ores from Odisha have seen a declining trend from 2011-12 to 2014-15. Exports have picked up steam in 2015-16. Iron ore is the most important mineral in Odisha’s mineral basket, accounting for a share of 96 per cent in FY16.
