Odisha Iron Ore Production Moves Up Sharply by 62% in Q1 FY17

Iron ore production in India’s largest iron ore producing state has witnessed sharp hike in Q1 FY17. Odisha iron ore production which was recorded at 15.25 MnT in Q1 FY16 has increased to 24.76 MnT in Q1 FY17. Hence an increase of 62% Y-o-Y can be noticed.

Production enhancement by Odisha based merchant miners has pushed state’s iron ore production since beginning of this year. It is to be noted that state govt. is anticipating iron ore production to touch 100 MnT in this fiscal.

In Q1 FY17, among the merchant miners, Rungta Mines remained the largest iron ore producer at 5.93 MnT (up by 47% Y-o-Y) followed by Serajuddin Mines at 2.77 MnT and AMTC at 2.19 MnT.

State owned miner – OMC produced 1.49 MnT iron ore in Q1 FY17. It aims to ramp up its iron ore production to 8.75 MnT in FY17.

Talking about captive iron ore production in Odisha, production of major producers were as follows: Tata Steel (2.82 MnT) and SAIL (1.76 MnT).

Although iron ore production in Odisha moved up on yearly basis, it registered a fall on monthly premises owing to monsoons. Iron ore production was recorded at 7.69 MnT in Jul’16 (down by 8% M-o-M).
