Production of chrome and chrome concentrates in Odisha has gone up approximately 75% in May from April 2015.
In May, Odisha produced 268,289 MT of chrome ore and chrome concentrates. This was mainly due to OMC’s production increasing to 83,111 MT in May, up by over 200% M-o-M.
In May OMC produced 83,111 MT – over 30% of the total chrome ore production in Odisha for the month.
In another development, Tata Steel’s Sukinda chrome mines may get non-captive status as Odisha government’s inter-departmental panel is not very keen to change its status to captive. If the mine gets non-captive status, Tata Steel’s chrome mines would get an extension only till 2020. But it will boost chrome ore availability in the market. Ferro chrome producers have been pressing for opening up of merchant chrome mines in the state.
