Bhubaneswar:  The Odisha government’s high level inter-departmental committee headed by the development commissioner UN Behera today approved giving extension to 7 mines out of total 8 proposals placed before it.

The eight mines whose proposals were placed before the committee were RB Das Iron and Manganese Ore, Tarini Prasad Mohanty Iron Ore and Manganese Ore, Tarini Minerals (P) Ltd Iron Ore and Mala Roy and Others, Iron and Manganese Ore under Joda Circle, B C Mohanty and Sons (P) Ltd Chromite Ore and Tata Steel Chromite Ore under Jajpur Circle, Gitarani Mohanty, Iron Ore under Koida Circle and Gandhamardan Sponge Iron Ore at Putlipani in Keonjhar.

In case of the proposal of Mala Roy mines, the panel has asked for more information.

In May, the panel has approved opening of 29 iron ore, Manganese and lime stone mines as per the new MMDR ACT.

No captive status for Tata’s chrome mine?

On the other hand the Tata Steel’s Sukinda Chrome mines may get non-captive status as the inter-departmental panel is not very keen to change its status to captive. If the mine gets non-captive status Tats would get the extension till 2020. But it’ll boost chrome ore availability in the market.  The ferro chrome producers have been pressing for opening of the merchant chrome mines in the state.
