NTPC: Performance Statistics in FY17

NTPC Ltd crossed 250 Billion Units power generation mark in FY17 against the backdrop of declining national PLF.

NTPC’s total power generation was 250.314 Billion Units(BU) in FY17 as against 241.977 BU generated in the previous year, an increase of around 3.45% Y-o-Y. During FY17, NTPC Coal stations achieved PLF of 78.59% as against National PLF of 59.88% for thermal plants.

All India PLF for thermal plants decreased by 3.79% Y-o-Y compared with 62.24 in FY16. Whereas PLF of NTPC’s coal-fired plants in FY17 remained almost constant compared with 78.61 during FY16.

Fuel Consumption during FY17:

NTPC consumed 160.38 MnT coal during FY17, out of which 159.35 MnT coal was from the domestic source while remaining 1.03 MnT was imported coal.

The company has reduced its dependence on imported coal, as coal imports fell by 89.14% Y-o-Y from 9.48 MnT in FY16. While coal from domestic sources has increased by 4.97% Y-o-Y.

Consumption of gas by power plants has decreased from 5.20 MMSCMD (Million Standard Cubic Meter per day) in FY16 to 5.17 MMSCMD in FY17.

Financial Results:
NTPC registered over 10% increase in the total income. The total income in FY17 was INR 79,342.30 crore as against INR 72,009.16 crore reported in the previous year.

During FY17, the company paid INR 66507.19 crore as expenses on Fuel, electricity, financial costs and other various trades.

Also, NTPC suffered an impairment loss of INR 782.95 crore on account of investment in Ratnagiri Gas and Power Ltd, known as the Dabhol project.

After paying a net amount of INR 3002.64 crore as tax, net audited profit of NTPC during FY17 stood INR 9385.26 crore, down by 12.85% Y-o-Y compared with INR 10769.60 crore in FY16.

Achievements during FY17:

Installed Capacity:
NTPC Ltd has joined the top league of electricity generators globally by crossing 50GW capacity mark. With the commissioning of 500 MW unit at Unchahar in Uttar Pradesh the total installed capacity of NTPC has risen to 50498 MW.

The company also commissioned first high efficiency 800 MW unit at Kudgi and has steadily added to its renewable portfolio during the fiscal.

The current installed capacity of NTPC Group stands 51410 MW.

Capacity Addition:
NTPC Group’s installed capacity increased to 50498 MW as on 21 Mar’17 with a capacity addition of 3845 MW during FY17; installed capacity of NTPC Group was 46653 MW on 31 Mar’16.

Standalone Capacity addition by NTPC (excluding JVs/Subsidiaries) during FY17 was 3520 MW.

Moreover, the 12th Plan capacity addition target of 11920 MW has been exceeded by adding 12840 MW, the highest ever capacity addition in any 5-year plan by NTPC.

Highest Single-Day Power-Generation:
NTPC and Group NTPC also achieved highest ever daily generation of 784.74 MU (Million Units) and 870.11 MUs on 22 Mar’17 surpassing previous best of 782.95MUs & 866.47MUs achieved on 9 Sep’16.

NTPC coal stations also clocked highest ever daily generation of 749.63 MU on 22 Mar’17 over previous highest of 742.51 MU in 2016.
