NTPC to invite Tender for Indo-Bangla Joint Venture Power Project in Jan’15

NTPC, India’ biggest power producer, will soon invite a tender for development of 1,320 MW coal based power project in Bangladesh.

National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) will invite tender this month for construction of USD 1.2 billion Indo-Bangla joint venture power project, to be built in Bangladesh. The coal based 1,320 MW super thermal power project is expected to become operational by December, 2018.

Bangladesh India Friendship Power Company (BIFPCL), a 50:50 joint venture between Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDP) and NTPC, will look towards the construction of this project. NTPC and BPDP have already signed a JV agreement in January, 2012. The 1,320 MW Maitree Project is the first project of this venture. A two units of 660 MW each will set up in Bangladesh.

“The company is looking for a consultant for sourcing coal to this project as the plant will likely to consume about 8 MnT coal annually. Hopefully, the construction of plant is suppose to start from April, 2015”, a senior Manager of NTPC said.

Power Demand in Bangladesh

India, one of the power sourcing country to Bangladesh, is providing about 500 MW power, of which NTPC supplies about 250 MW to Bangladesh at present. With growing energy demand in Bangladesh, this coal based power project will be a positive node to fulfill the increased demand of power utilities.
