India, the 2nd largest non-coking coal importer globally, imported 14.8 MnT of coal in the month. The quantity is more or less similar to preceding month.
Mounting indigenous coal production has failed to minimize non-coking import to India. The country alike the last month has imported 14.8 MnT of coal in the first month of 2016. The quantity is 0.4% is less than last month. However, CIL’s coal production increased by 1.5% in a month’s time.
Although, coal production in India is ramping up, Indian power producers are continuously eyeing on foreign material. The major reason being the unavailability of high GCV indigenous material, which is required to run the plant.

Leading discharging ports
All the ports together in WCI hold about 9.1 MnT of non-coking coal and rest 5.7 MnT landed in the ECI. Mundra and Krishnapatnam ports were the major destinations for holding non-coking coal import for the month. They received about 3.3 MnT and 1.3 MnT of non-coking coal in Jan’16 against 2.8 MnT and 1.6 MnT in Dec’15 respectively. The quantity landed at Mundra port increased by 17.8%.

Leading non-coking coal exporters in Jan’16
Indonesia and South Africa were the major exporters to India in the month. Indonesia exported about 10.1 MnT of non-coking coal, registering a fall of 7.3% against the previous month. Meanwhile, South Africa exported about 2.8 MnT; up by 3.7% in the duration.
