NMDC ramps up Bellary iron ore production to 32,000 MT

After the recent ban by the Supreme Court on iron ore mining
in Bellary, Karnataka, state-owned NMDC today said it has ramped up production
to 32,000 tonne per day to meet the shortage that is being faced by the steel
industry.

The chairman and managing director of NMDC, Rana Som said, “In the last one week, we have had an average production of 32,000-33,000
tonne. This range should be continued because we are doing this despite heavy
rain and fog over there. I believe that makes 1 million tonne on a monthly
basis.”

He added that there is a sort of cleaning operation which
has been undertaken under the instruction of the Supreme Court of India. He
believes the Indian iron ore mining sector will derive long-term benefits out
of this clean-up in the mining sector.
