Netherlands coal imports fell both on yearly and monthly basis.
Netherlands, one of the major coal importers in the world witness decline in the yearly coal imports by 9% to 56.41 MnT in CY16 compared with 61.84 MnT in CY15, as per data released by Netherlands Customs.
Monthly imports fell to the lowest value since Jan’16 to 4.24 MnT in Dec’16, down by 23% M-o-M compared with 5.49 MnT in Nov’16.
Imports in Dec’16 also lower by 16% Y-o-Y compared with 5.04 MnT in Dec’15.
Grade-wise Coal Imports:
Netherlands majorly imports Bituminous coal and coking coal, along with small quantities of Coke and Semi-coke, Anthracite, Pet Coke and other grades of coal.
In 2016, the country received 18.59 MnT quantities of Bituminous coal and 11.20 MnT of Coking coal, these two coal commodities accounted for more than 50% of the total coal imports.
Imports of Pet Coke, Coke, and Anthracite improved in CY16, while that of the remaining quantities was down in the year.

Quantities in MnT
Major Exporting Countries:
Colombia, Russia and USA are the three major coal exporting nations to Netherlands, which accounts for more than 60% of the country’s total imports.
Colombia remained top coal exporters in CY16, however exports have fell by 9% Y-o-Y to 15.41 MnT in CY16.
Russia, second-largest coal exporters, supplied 12.81 MnT coal to Netherlands, exports were almost equal compared to the previous year, and so no changes were seen in the yearly exports.
USA, third largest coal supplier, exported 10.02 MnT in CY16 down significantly by 26% Y-o-Y compared with 13.47 MnT in CY15.
Australia recorded major improvements in exports by 34% Y-o-Y to 7.60 MnT in CY16, while exports from South Africa witness downfall of 50% Y-o-Y to 2.57 MnT in CY16.
