National Aluminium Company (NALCO) has taken a substantial step towards entering into coal mining space by receiving green nod for its Utkal-E coal block.

The company has been granted mining lease by Department of Steel & Mines, Government of Odisha for a period of 30 years.

The lease would enable the company to extract 2 mn t coal on a yearly basis from the block having a total mineable reserve of 70 mn t which is spread over an area of 523.74 hectares under Chendipada tahasil of Angul district.

It is pertinent to note that two coal blocks-Utkal D and E were allotted to NALCO in May ’16, of which mining lease of Utkal D block has already been sanctioned earlier on Mar ’21.

With the commencement of these blocks, the total mineable reserve of the company would reach to 175 mn t which will be pivotal in meeting the coal requirement of its captive power plant.
