NALCO Acquires Mining Lease for Utkal-D Coal Block

National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO), one of leading producer of alumina and aluminium in the country, has been granted the mining lease of Utkal-D coal block by the Government of Odisha, through a notification by department of Steel & Mines.

The mining lease of the coal block spread over an area of 301.28 hects in villages Kosala, Nandichood, Similisahi & Raijharan under Chendipada Tahasil of Angul District, has been permitted for a period of 30 years.

It may be noted that upon execution of mining lease deed, NALCO is considering to open Utkal-D coal block in FY21. The initial capacity of Utkal-D coal block is 2 MnTPA with a total mineable reserve of 101.68 MnT.

Utkal-D coal block was allocated to NALCO along with Utkal-E block in May’16. The company is also in the process of obtaining the mining lease for Utkal-E block. Upon operationalization of both blocks, the company has said that it would be able to produce 4 MnT coal per year.

Expressing confidence that the commencement of operation at Utkal-D coal block would contribute to the growth of the company by ensuring secure coal supply, CMD of the firm, Mr Sridhar Patra, thanked the state and central government, stating that it will usher in a new era of development for the company.
