Mongolia Coal Export

Mongolian Coal Exports Up 12% M-o-M in May’18

Mongolian coal exports have increased 12% M-o-M in May’18, which was also the highest monthly exports for CY18.

Coal export from the country had increased for the third successive month in May’18, marked at 3.96 MnT against 3.55 MnT in Apr’18. Exports in May’18 had also recorded growth on the yearly basis, rising 13% from 3.49 MnT in May’17.

During May’18, nearly all the coal exported from Mongolia was destined to China, with UK taking a minimal share of coal during the month.

After a sharp increase in coal imports during the first quarter of CY18, the Chinese government had imposed strict restriction on imports of all types of coal at the several ports. However, it had negligible effect on Chinese coal import from Mongolia, as China majorly source Mongolian coal through the roadways.

Chinese coal imports from Mongolian had recorded steady increase since the past three months. Imports in May’18 were marked at 3.96 MnT.

UK was the other importer from Mongolia, taking a mere 999 MT coal in May’18. Coal import by the UK had drastically fallen from the year-ago month, when the country had sourced 94,238 MT coal in May’17.

Although Mongolian coal export have recorded higher gains on the year-on-year basis during the last three months, but the disruption in coal movement to China in Jan’18-Feb’18 has weighted down the total coal exports in CY18.

Mongolia’s total coal export has been marked 5% lower at 14.14 MnT in Jan’18-May’18, compared with 14.92 MnT in Jan’17-May’17.
