Mongolian coal export has fallen 5% Y-o-Y to 18.02 MnT during the first half of the CY18 (Jan’18-Jun’18). The country had exported 18.95 MnT during the similar time frame in CY17.
Coal export during the half year period was weighted down by the logistic issues, which had curtailed coal movement to its major consumer-China. Consequently, Exports had fell 34% Y-o-Y to 3.15 MnT in Jan’18-Feb’18.
Exports increased during the subsequent months from Mar’18 to May’18 both on the monthly and yearly basis; however, exports had again fallen in Jun’18.
During Jun’18, Mongolian coal export was down 3% Y-o-Y to 3.91 MnT, which was also slightly lower on the month from 3.96 MnT in May’18.
Country-wise Coal Exports:
Chinese coal imports from Mongolia decreased 4% Y-o-Y to 17.8 MnT in Jan’18-Jun’18. As a matter of fact, nearly 99% of the Mongolian coal was exported to China during the first of CY18, while all the exported coal quantity was taken by China in the month of Jun’18.
The remaining share of coal was taken by Hong Kong, Singapore and UK in Jan’18-Jun’18. Notably, Hong Kong and Singapore had not received any coal from Mongolia during Jan’17-Jun’17 period.
Coal import by the UK has witness a drastic fall of 88% Y-o-Y during the half year period.
