Mongolian coal exports have decreased 12% on the month in Jan’19, to mark its lowest total since Feb’18. Data provided by custom shows that the country had exported 2.12 MnT coal in Jan’19 against 2.4 MnT in Dec’18.
Mongolian coal exports have been falling on the monthly basis in line with the import restriction imposed by its major customer-China, but were still 10% higher on the year from 1.93 MnT in Jan’18.
A country-wise break up indicate that China had taken lion’s share of the monthly total accounting to 2.09 MnT in Jan’19, while remaining quantity was shipped to Singapore and UK.
Chinese coal imports from Mongolia fell 11% M-o-M from 2.36 MnT in Dec’18, but was 13% higher on the year compared with 1.85 MnT in Jan’18.
Despite having vast reserves of coking coal, Mongolian exports have continued to be constrained due to transportation bottlenecks which would require substantial investment into rail and road infrastructure for any significant growth.
